What Christianity Isn't

Every so often I am astounded.

I have received e-mails from my denomination today about assisting the people of Haiti. As I write this, there is aid being collected by people all over the country. A large number of people doing this are people of faith. The faith they have, no matter where they fall on the theological spectrum, is about caring for others as Jesus would want us to. This is what Christianity is.

In this You Tube clip from Pat Robertson speaking about Haiti, we learn what Christianity is not. I am not sure what religious tradition Robertson is now, but it's obvious that he's given up Christianity.

Interestingly, two of the vocal nutjobs on this subject are right wing apparatchiks. Robertson is speaking in tongues and Limbaugh implores his listeners to withold money from earthquake relief because "We've alredy donated to Haiti. It's called the U.S. income tax."

If one wants to explore the deep divisions between citizens in the U.S., one need only look to this incident. Interjection of politics into an instance of intense human suffering is debasing to both politics and humanity/humaneness. As a leading (though inexplicable to me) spokesman for Conservative issues, Limbaugh passed up the opportunity to show any sense of shared humanity.

I'm willing to bet his listeners by an overwhelming majority don't share his witholding of love (would that be hatred?) for his fellow humans.

This would have been a perfect opportunity for Limbaugh to follow the simple advice "if you don't have something nice to say, just shut up."

The sad thing is these two idiots have followers, especially Limbaugh.

People who may have donated may do what he said and withold donations. These people are desparate. They had so little to begin with.

I hope these two enjoy their money now, they sure won't be taking it with them.
